About me

I started writing in my teens, and published my first book in 1997 (quite a while later!). Since then, I have published eleven non-fiction books on various subjects, with my twelfth due out in August 2009. I am now concentrating on fiction (since that’s where my heart truly lies) – specifically cross-genre SF/cosmic horror of the type practised by H.P. Lovecraft, William Hope Hodgson, Clark Ashton Smith, Algernon Blackwood, Caitlin R. Kiernan etc.
Please note: I AM NOT THE ALAN BAKER WHO WRITES CHILDREN’S BOOKS. I AM THE ALAN BAKER WHO WRITES PARANORMAL, POPULAR HISTORY AND COSMIC HORROR BOOKS

As ever these things are very popular and the book is competing against many others but it's great that our publisher has done this for us. OTOLI has seen many super reviews to date and it is currently out with 5 young adult US reviewers and also going to a Northern Ireland reviewer next week so hopefully these will continue to be positive and help the profile of the book further. I know my publisher will be attending the 3 major book fair events (London, Frankfurt and US) too this year so who knows what the future could hold. Thanks again for the kind comments regarding OTOLI, I'm just glad you liked it. I think I'm enjoying being with a smaller publisher, they are growing all the time and look to be making their plans for the future. I'm not too worried about big 6 publishing now (although anything that distributes well is a good thing), the writing part is the key thing for me. Royalties come in from wherever if the writing is good no matter how big the publisher so with that in mind I'm ready for the future where writing is concerned. The second YA book is looking like it should be a green light for publishing so once things are totally confirmed I'll let everyone know (I never got around to sharing any of it here but will put up some tasters). My third YA book is fully drafted now so I may look to put this up here for beta readers, it will help the editing and polishing process, much as you have done with your own works! I'm also looking at a sequel for OTOLI centred more around the character of Jenny too. After that I may delve back in to Adult fiction, I have some ideas bubbling away. I'll keep an eye out for the release of TLK too. Best wishes Bryony (more) and received+3

Just read that The Lighthouse Keeper had been accepted for publication. Congratulations- it's well deserved. It was the first book I read when I signed on for CN and (like most of the readers on the site) I loved it. Cheers, Ross (more) and earned+3

Thanks for your message, and welcome to CompletelyNovel. I would certainly encourage you to post some work here. I've been here for maybe three or four years, and I've never had a bad experience. All of the feedback I've received from readers has been polite, thoughtful and constructive, and Anna and the team are extremely helpful and friendly. If you'd like to read my work (many thanks, by the way!), I'd recommend my supernatural mystery The Lighthouse Keeper, which in fact has just been accepted by my publisher in London for publication next May or June. I'd be very interested to know what you think. Good luck, and all the best, Alan (more) and received+3

I just finished a novel by John Phillip Brackus, which I might say was an excellent read and indicates the caliber of books on this site. I want to start reading your writing next. I am also an author, Science Fiction, History, Thriller and was considering posting and/or publishing on site. I wanted to ask your opinion since you appear to be a well established on site writer? Thanks in advance, Gene aka oldwarrior. (more) and gained+3

Snowbooks have accepted the novel for publication, so when it's published, I'll be taking it down from CN. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who has posted nice comments about it; and to those who were slightly more critical, thank you also. I took your comments on board, and made it a better book as a result. (more) and gained+3
